Hair Disasters

We’ve all had them, those moments where you realise your hair looks horrific and there’s probably nothing you can do. We resign ourselves to wearing a hat forever. Never fear though, for many of the most common hair disasters there are simple solutions that can often reverse the problem or at least repair it.

Here is our guide to the most common hair disasters and how to rectify them:

1. Bad Blonde
If you’ve dyed your hair at home, there is always the risk that it will go wrong. This is particularly true of those who are attempting to bleach their hair at home with the common problem of that nasty gold colour that appears instead of the champagne blonde you were after. The most common mistake that people make is the initial colour choice. If you don’t want a golden hue to your locks, choose a colour that is described as Ash, this will limited warm tones in your hair.
If it is too late for that and you’re living with a golden barnet that you don’t want to show anyone, use a simple toner. These can be bought inexpensively from chemists and will usually have a bluish tint to them. They will knock the gold colour out of the blonde after a few applications.

2. Chlorine Nightmare
Those who go swimming may have noticed their fair hair turning to a weird colour that has a slightly greenish tinge. To get rid of this, an instant fix is to apply tomato ketchup to the hair, leave for 10 minutes and rinse out. The colour will neutralise the green. A more permanent solution, if this keeps happening to you, is to apply a leave in conditioner before you go swimming. Coating your hair in this will protect your hair from the chemicals in the water as well as keeping the green at bay.

3. A Botched Perm
If a perm goes too curly and needs toning down, apply an intensive conditioning treatment from root to tip. Leave on the hair for 15 minutes then rinse. You should then set your hair in large rollers and let it dry naturally and you should see the result of a nicely relaxed perm. If this doesn’t work, you may wish to reverse the perm by having a permanent straightening treatment applied to the hair. If you are not confident in doing this yourself, it is best to let a professional do the job for you.

4. Split Ends
Once your ends split, they’re split and irreparable. Once the ends have split all you need to do is get your hair cut! Regular trims will prevent split ends from happening as your hair will be stronger. To further prevent split ends, protect your hair with a heat protecting spray when using a hairdryer, straighteners or curling tongs.

5. Chewing Gum Stuck in Hair
Getting chewing gum stuck in your hair is a nightmare and many people often resort to cutting it out and ruining their hair until it grows back. It is possible to remove chewing gum from the hair by simply soaking it in cola. The cola will loosen the gum and remove its stickiness. Another method of removing chewing gum is applying an ice cube to the hair which will also help to ease the gum out.

6. Scrunchies
Using a scrunchie in your hair is a hair disaster in itself. They went out in the early 90’s and should never return. Bin them.
